Last year, NHS Supply Chain launched a new staff wellbeing initiative to support staff and reward them for living a healthier life. Since launching in April 2023, staff have racked up an impressive 100,000 physical activities.

NHS Supply Chain manages the sourcing, delivery and supply of healthcare products, services and food for NHS trusts and healthcare organisations across England and Wales.

The Myles Wellbeing platform connects with a range of fitness trackers such as Apple Health, Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung or even your phone in your pocket. Staff then earn points for the activities that they enjoy and are able to do. They can compete with colleagues on leaderboards, complete challenges and earn trophies for their efforts.

Staff at NHS Supply Chain have been spending their points on a range of rewards such as donations to Alzheimer’s Society, as well as vouchers to retailers including Aldi, Amazon and Adidas.

In recent feedback, one member of staff said:

“It’s an incentive to get up and get active. The rewards are a huge motivator.”

Another staff member reported:

"I love tracking my workouts and sending high fives. It’s a good incentive to get moving and track your progress”.

Colleagues can send high fives to each other as a way to support and motivate one another. Staff at NHS Supply Chain have sent nearly 5,000 high fives already.

The teams have recorded the equivalent amount of activity as 610,873,637 steps which is the same as walking the circumference of the earth twice and then all the way to the moon!

The 100,000 activities are made up of 86 different activity types with some popular choices being:

  • Running
  • Walking
  • Gym workouts
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Gardening
  • Yoga

Some slightly more unique activities that people have enjoyed include:

  • Ice skating
  • Padel tennis
  • Waterpolo
  • Archery
  • Surfing
“Feedback from colleagues has been really positive, with people liking how inclusive the app is and the fact we can turn our Smyles into donations and rewards.  The team at Myles have also been great, helping us to develop bespoke challenges to add another layer of personalisation to the app.” - Chris Walker, Head of Risk & Compliance
