Which NHS Staff Are Most Burnt Out According to the Staff Survey 2023?

Let's take a deeper look at the breakdown from the NHS Staff Survey 2023 and focus on the groups of staff who are most burnt out.

According to the results from the NHS Staff Survey 2023, 30.38% of NHS staff say they feel burnt out because of their work. This is down from 33.97% in 2022 and 34.49% in 2021. Let's take a look at the groups of staff most affected by this.

21-30 year olds

39.70% of this group reported feeling burnt out because of their work. This is followed by 16-20 year olds at 35.40%.

Full time staff

32.16% of full time staff reported feeling burnt out because of their work, compared with 22.75% of staff who work up to 29 hours per week.

Staff that never work from home

32.66% of staff that never work from home reported feeling burnt out, compared with 23.46% of staff who always work from home.

Staff that have been with the NHS for 3-5 years

This cohort reported the highest rates of burnout at 34.31%.

Patient facing

Staff that a frequently or occasionally patient facing both reported high levels of burnout than staff who are not patient facing.

Have long lasting health conditions or illnesses

38.97% of this group reported being burnt out compared with 27.41% of staff without long lasting health conditions or illnesses.

Ambulance Service Staff

Out of the different types of organisations, ambulance staff had the highest rates of burnout at 39.11%.
